Mini SPARC (Ages 5 - 6, Grades K - 1) Imagine! Create! Young students explore the basic elements of theatre through storytelling, songs, improvisation and creative movement. Using props, basic costume pieces and age appropriate song and dance, students will build confidence, boost social skills, develop good stage manners and have lots of fun exploring the world of theater. There will be a short performance for parents and family on the last day of class.

Rising Stars, Jr. (Ages 7 - 8, Grades 2 - 3) Offered in Amelia ONLY, this class will explore musical theatre through poetry, stories and simple scripted material in combination with exciting song and dance. In addition to stage directions, basic speech skills development and stage choreography, students will rehearse and create a performance piece to be presented on a professional stage in May 2010.

Rising Stars (Ages 7 - 8, Grades 2 - 3) Discover and Perform! Students will have fun exploring poetry, stories, and simple scripted material in combination with exciting song and dance. In addition to creative movement, stage directions and basic speech skills building, students will rehearse and create performance pieces to be presented at the end of each semester. Material may come from your child’s favorite play, Disney musical or children’s literature. CORE Jr. (Ages 9 - 12, Grades 4 - 7) Offered in Amelia ONLY, this has two classes in one! This twelve week class offers exciting curriculum as students cover all the theatrical bases: acting, singing, stage choreography, voice and speech, improvisation, scripted material, musical repertoire and basic stage terminology. The class will culminate in a final performance on a professional stage in May 2010.

CORE (Ages, 9 - 15, Grades 4 - 10) Act! Sing! Dance! 3 classes in one! Each two-hour weekly CORE class is divided into three 40-minute segments of acting, singing and dance, taught by different instructors in the various disciplines. Students will be placed in rotating groups based on age and/or skill. At times, these classes will collaborate on performance material. SPARC’s signature class offers an exciting curriculum as students cover all the theatrical bases: stage terminology, voice and speech, improvisation, scripted material, Broadway musical repertoire, and a variety of dance styles used in stage choreography. Students in CORE participate in Showcase at the Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen on April 18, 2010.

Advanced CORE (Ages 14 - 18, Grades 9 - 12) Advanced CORE takes performance to a whole new level. Instructors will use advanced techniques, terminology, and performance training to finely tune the skills of these committed young performers. A minimum of three years in CORE or special consideration by audition only is required for enrollment in this course. Performance material may be drawn from traditional musical theater repertoire, chosen according to the latest musical productions in Richmond, potential audition opportunities, or a variety of cabaret style material that will be featured in a showcase setting at the end of the semester.

Rehearsal and Production Kids- The Twelve Elves of Christmas (*Audition only) (Ages 8 - 13, Grades 3 - 8) Rehearsal & Production is an opportunity for young actors to work through the process of putting together a musical, from page to stage. With the guidance of experienced professional directors, students will learn the nuts and bolts of creating an ensemble musical theater piece. Rehearsal and Production Teens- The World Goes 'Round - The Songs of Kander & Ebb (*Audition only) (Ages 14 - 18, Grades 9 - 12) Rehearsal & Production is an opportunity for young actors to work through the process of putting together a musical, from page to stage. With the guidance of experienced professional directors, students will learn the nuts and bolts of creating an ensemble musical theater piece. Studio (Ages 14 - 18, Grades 9 - 12) For the serious acting student, this is an upper-level acting lab for the teen with a commitment to the craft of performance. Each week this two-hour workshop includes physical and vocal warm-ups and specialized acting techniques. This semester, Studio will explore Shakespeare’s Women: Damsels, Divas, and Devils, culminating in a performance on April 23 and 24 in SPARC’s black box theatre as part of Minds Wide Open: Virginia Celebrates Women in the Arts. Studio is recommended for students with two or more years of Core SPARC training or two or more years of high school drama classes and onstage experience.

This technical theatre class will go "behind the scenes" and explore the avrious elements of designing, building and running all the elements that go into making theatre come alive! Students will have the opportunity to design and work on sets, sound and lights for the fall Rehearsal & Production classes.
