Class Offerings

Mini SPARC (Grades K-1) Imagine! Create! Play! Our youngest students explore the basic elements of theatre through storytelling, songs, improvisation and creative movement. Using props, basic costume pieces and age appropriate song and dance, students will build confidence, boost social skills, develop good stage manners and have lots of fun exploring the world of theater. There will be a short performance for parents and family on the last day of class.

Rising Stars (Grades 2-3) Discover and Perform! Students will have fun exploring poetry, stories, simple scripted material in combination with exciting song and dance. In addition to creative movement, stage directions and bsic speech skills building, students will rehearse and create performance pieces to be presented at the end of each semester. Material may come from your child's favorite play, Disney musical, or children's literature. There will be a short performance for parents and family on the last day of class.

Core (Grades 4-10) Act! Sing! Dance! 3 classes in one! Each two-hour weekly Core class is divided into three 40-minute segments of acting, singing and dance, taught by different instructors in the various disciplines. Students will be placed in rotating groups based on age and/or skill. At times, these classes will collaborate on performance material. SPARC's signature class offers an exciting curriculum as students cover all the theatrical bases: stage terminology, voice and speech, improvisation, scripted material, Broadway musical repertoire, and a variety of dance styles uses in stage choreography.

Studio (Grades 9-12) For the serious acting student, this is an upper-level acting lab for the teen with a commitment to the craft of performance. Each week this three-hour workshop includes one hour of speech for the stage and two hours of specialized acting training. Material used may include works of commedia dell'arte, Shakespeare, and modern/contemporary plays. From time to time, guest artists offer workshops in Studio on such topics as: Acting for the Camera, Movement for the Actor, Comedy and Professional Development. Studio is recommended for students with three or more years of Core SPARC training, or two or more years of high school drama classes and onstage experience. An interview with SPARC instructors or a recommendation from a teacher or director may be requested.

Comedy Improv with Comedy Sportz (Grades 4 and Up) Comedy Sportz focuses on improvisation through performance technique, teamwork and acceptance. This "outside the box" training teaches the importance of listening, shared focus, concentration, risk taking, creative thinking, and most importantly, learning through mistakes. Students will perform an improvisation show at the end of this course on stage at Comedysportz Improv Theatre.

Young Actors Workshop (Grades 6-9) This workshop is designed for the student who wishes to work exclusively on acting skills using monologue and scene study. Students will learn the basics of script analysis, and how to create strong characterizations through vocal and physical exploration.

"Really Rosie" Production Class (Ages 7-10) This fun musical, based on the books of Maurice Sendak, and featuring music by Carole King,tells the story of Rosie, the sassiest kid on her block of Brooklyn's Avenue P, as she entertains everyone by directing and starring in an Oscar-winning movie based on the exciting, and slightly exaggerated) story of her life. This audition-only class gives young students a chance to work on both rehearsal & performance.

*PLEASE NOTE* - Really Rosie is an audition only class. Auditions took place in June, and the class is now full. A similar production class may be offered in the spring. We are not taking registration for Really Rosie at this time.
